About Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are parasites that preferentially feed on humans but will feed on most warm blooded animals if available. Although they are not considered to be a major pest or health hazard, bed bugs can be highly unpleasant to live with and can cause a severe lack of sleep, anemia and serious mental fatigue.

Cause of Bed Bugs

Dwellings can become infested with bed bugs in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Bed bugs and eggs inadvertently brought in from other infested dwellings by visiting pets, or a visiting person's clothing or luggage.

  • Items infested with bed bugs (such as furniture, clothing or backpacks) brought in.

  • Nearby dwellings or infested items, if there are easy routes that the bed bugs may travel (through duct work or false ceilings).

  • Wild animals (such as bats or birds) that may also harbour bed bugs.

  • People or pets visiting an infested areas (apartment, subway, movie theatre, or hotel) and carrying the bed bugs to another area on their clothing, luggage, or body.

Detection of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are elusive and usually nocturnal, which can make them hard to spot. Bed Bugs often lodge unnoticed in dark crevices, and eggs can be nestled in fabric seams. Aside from bed bug bite symptoms, signs include faecal spots, blood smears on sheets, and molts.

Bed bugs can be found singly, but often congregate once established. Bed Bugs usually remain close to hosts, commonly in or near beds or couches. Harbourage areas can vary greatly, however, including luggage, vehicles, furniture and bedside clutter. Bed bugs may also nest near animals that have nested within a dwelling, such as bats, birds, or rodents. The eggs of bed bugs are found in similar places where the bed bugs themselves are found, and are attached to surfaces by a sticky substance.

Getting Rid of Bed Bugs

Treatment of bed bugs has become one of the most challenging subjects facing the pest control industry today. In a recent survey of pest control companies, bed bugs were identified as the pest they find hardest to eradicate.

The bed bug control system designed for each infestation must take into account a wide variety of contributing factors. The size and condition of the infested structure, the use of the infested area. All aspects of the individual infestation will affect the bed bug treatment strategy we will employ to eradicate the infestation.
